This large series of shaped canvas paintings explores variations of black against four shades of grey. The monochromatic palette ranges from 100% to 80% grey in 5% increments.
Through subtle shifts in tone and geometry, the works investigate perception, seriality, and the tension between uniformity and difference.
The shaped supports challenge the neutrality of the monochrome. In addition, they introduce a spatial and architectural dimension that engages the viewer’s movement and gaze.
Jean-Charles Kien developed this project in collaboration with the French artist Jacques Herrmann.
